"New gTLD" stands for new generic top-level domain.

It refers to the large number of new domain extensions that have been introduced since 2012 as part of a program by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). The goal of this program was to expand the available domain name options and foster more competition and innovation on the internet.

Before this program, the internet was dominated by a handful of traditional gTLDs like .com, .org, and .net. The new gTLD program has allowed for the creation of hundreds of new, more descriptive domain extensions, such as:

These new gTLDs offer businesses and individuals a way to create a more relevant and memorable online identity, especially as it has become increasingly difficult to find desirable domain names with the older extensions. A new round of the ICANN new gTLD program is starting in April 2026.
